Does anyone consider the origins or formula of a perfume as they spritz it behind their ear?

At Himba, your scent matters to us because we know exactly what goes into every perfume we craft. We have a personal connection with the people who create it, ensuring each fragrance is made with care and authenticity.

Before we dive into our story, let’s first explore the origins of perfume in Ancient Egypt. The fragrances they crafted were far more than just pleasant aromas—they served important purposes in their daily lives. Dating back to 3000 BC, the ancient Egyptians were pioneers in the creation of cosmetics, aromatherapy, and perfumery, laying the foundation for these arts as we know them today

Egyptian Motivations

Scents have always played a vital role in daily life, serving purposes that range from communicating with the gods to masking the smell of sacrificial offerings—and, of course, simply to smell pleasant.

We've all heard of Cleopatra, but did you know her favorite perfume was Neroli, cherished for its aphrodisiac properties? She was so captivated by its scent that she had the sails of her ship soaked in it, ensuring that Mark Antony would catch its alluring aroma even before he saw her. The famed playwright William Shakespeare once remarked that even "the winds fell in love with her beauty and enchanting scent."

Himba Fragrance continues the legacy of Perfumery.

The semi-nomadic Himba tribes of Northern Namibia have reclaimed their traditional art of perfumery, while we also extend support to women in Uganda and Ethiopia as they recover from the aftermath of civil wars.
